Our client, Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, is a well-known player in the world of naval shipbuilding. For more than 130 years, Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (Damen Naval) has been building ships that sail the seven seas. These ships include a wide selection of various types of ships, such as commer-cial vessels, tugboats, freighters, mega yachts and ferries. For the last few dec-ades, Damen Naval has focused on building naval vessels of high-tech quality. These vessels are not only sold to the Dutch Royal Navy, but also to other buyers all over the world. In recent years, Damen Naval has developed into a modern shipyard. In this process, innovation in the field of shipbuilding is given an increasingly prominent place. The project-based approach - from engineering to production - combines (mechanized) technical production with skilful manual work. The three pillars of Damen Navel are: Design, Engineering and Shipbuilding.
Damen Naval is part of the Damen Shipyards Group, the leading employer in the field of shipbuilding in the Netherlands, with approximately 8000 employees, who work at more than 30 companies throughout the world. This enables Damen Na-val to build ships in an increasing number of countries and gives the employees the opportunity to develop in a national and international environment.
The commercial activities of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding take place all over the world. For the expansion of the sales of newly-built naval vessels in the continent of South East Asia we are currently looking for a Sales Director South East Asia (Demanding sales position, focus areas: Indonesia and Malaysia). Sales experience in the Far East is a prerequisite!
Your office is located at Vlissingen (Headquarters Damen, The Netherlands)
DE FUNCTIE
As a Sales Director you have a proven track record in independent selling of ma-jor (military) projects. You are able to determine the business strategy, to define targets and to implement the commercial plan. At the same time, you definitely consider other options that are not defence-related. You have diplomatic skills and you have the patience to generate leads and make these concrete (long-term lobbying). You are familiar with the customs of the business community in the Far East/ Asia region and more than anybody else you know that the “Dutch direct approach” is not appreciated in this region. You are also an entrepreneur and you are highly flexible and able to adapt yourself to circumstances. You re-port to the commercial director of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in Vlis-singen.
In a nutshell, your activities include the following:
• You maintain and intensify the contacts with existing business relations and you also look for new, potential business relations in the market;
• You develop a strategic vision, both for the short term and the medium term. This includes market approach, pricing policy, sales targets;
• From the strategic vision of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, you trans-late the marketing and sales plan into specific marketing and sales activities;
• Apart from the regular sales targets, you specify additional targets, resulting from the new possibilities that Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding can offer customers overseas;
• You maintain good contacts with the engineering department in view of prod-uct innovations and new developments.
WIE ZOEKEN WE
For this position, we are looking for a pro-active, commercial and technical sales director, preferably with experience in the world of Damen Naval or in closely related lines of business. You have a commercial, technical background and higher professional education+ or a master degree in the fields of defence, avia-tion and aerospace technology, mechanical engineering or similar. In addition, you have a proven sales “track record” in medium-sized or large, technically-oriented organizations and you also have experience in sales management of military, industrial capital goods.
Excellent communication skills, social skills and negotiation techniques, auton-omy, “hands-on” mentality, perseverance, commercial vision, decisiveness and result-oriented are the key words that complete your profile. Naturally, the can-didate has a thorough knowledge of the English language. You are familiar with the local cultures and you are keen on travelling (long business trips, more than 50%).
IMPORTANT: You preferably have a military sales background and/ or specific naval experience, in which diplomacy, empathy and decisiveness in relation to the various contacts and discussion partners up to a high political/ ministerial level are essential.
